Hello All! HOT weather abounds throughout the Mid-South. August
will bring the climax of our escalating temperatures here on Greers
Ferry. Towards the end of the month we will have a good shot at some
much needed rain as Hurricane season begins. Although the reservoir
has remained well above normal pool this year we are now facing a
slight deficit in rainfall and cooling rains are needed to kick fall
fishing into gear. I won't get to far ahead of myself but this fall
is going to be awesome, when taking into consideration we've had at
least 6 shad spawns already this year, Lot's of Bait and lot's of
Bites!
Hybrids and White bass are going to be the best bite going on the
reservoir through August. Look for schools of shad with your
electronics, once located most all of our species of game fish will be
nearby. Although surfacing will be seen, use those graphs to locate
your bait and you can fish on active schools throughout your day. Hot
spots to try this month will be (in no particular order) Cove Creek,
Edgemont, Sugarloaf, Salt Creek and Point 6. Cindy K Spinners, spoons
and Topwaters in natural colors or clear will work best.
August is not my best walleye month here on the reservoir but days
of decent numbers will show up when you get on the right flat. With
that being said, it's important to cover lots of water when looking
for these fish. Trolling bottom bouncers, Crankbaits and Spinner rigs
with crawlers will help you locate feeding fish. Once located, slow
down and comb that area well. I personally like areas in the 22 - 40
ft zone when fishing in this manner.
Lot's of shad means lot's of healthy bass! I've been doing the
best covering as much water as possible in many different areas on the
lake. Locating shad is a must for any serious school of bass. Good
Kentucky's and some decent largemouth are taking advantage of all the
bait. The Spook bite has been decent to good early and late with
some mornings lasting till 11:00 or so. The shaky head and drop shot
will get the most bites here when coupled with a Lake Fork Tackle
Hyper Worm in Watermelon Red. The finesse set up accounted for
several good fish in July and will be a big player during August.
